A pair of third-period goals pushed the UMass hockey team past UConn, 2-0, on Friday night in Storrs, Conn. in the two teams’ first of two matchups this weekend as part of a home-and-home series.

Freshman forward Dans Locmelis scored less than three minutes into the third to give the Minutemen a lead, a goal that stood as the game-winner.

Scott Morrow and Samuli Niinisaari picked up assists on Locmelis’ sixth goal of the season.

Just 18 seconds later, Jack Musa doubled UMass’ lead with an even-strength goal – assisted by Kenny Connors and Cole O'Hara.

With the way the Minutemen’s defense has played of late, something head coach Greg Carvel mentioned earlier in the week, two goals was plenty for them to hold on the win.

Michael Hrabal was brilliant in goal, stopping all 36 shots that came his way. Hrabal, a freshman, picked up his second shutout this season. On top of Hrabal’s strong goaltending, the defense in front of him was terrific once again.

UMass blocked 14 shots on the night (compared to UConn’s seven), and made each shooting angle tough for the Huskies.

The Minutemen (15-7-3) host UConn Saturday night at 7 p.m. looking to make it two in a row heading into a home-and-home with top-ranked Boston College the following weekend.
