The UMass men’s hockey program continued to rake in the accolades on Friday, as senior forward Bobby Trivigno and freshman defenseman Scott Morrow were both named First Team East 2021-2022 AHCA/CCM Hockey All-Americans.
The award was Trivigno’s second time earning a First Team All-American honor, the first time in the men’s hockey program history that a player has twice earned the nod at the Division I level. Morrow was the only freshman in the nation to make the First Team, and was one of only two first-years named All-American; the other was Luke Hughes from the University of Michigan.
Trivigno’s selection puts an exclamation point on a senior year that culminated in him signing a contract with his childhood team, the New York Rangers, despite going undrafted. The Setauket, N.Y. native finished his 2021-22 campaign as the seventh UMass player to reach both the 50-goal and 100-point plateau in his career. Trivigno was third in the nation in scoring with 49 points (20G, 29A), all career highs. He was a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top NCAA men’s hockey player in the nation, and was the fourth player in history to win back-to-back Walter Brown Awards, given to the best American-born Division I player competing in New England each season. Trivigno was also named the Hockey East Player of the Year.
Morrow’s freshman campaign was a strong one; he finished third in the nation in rookie point scoring per game, and finished sixth among all freshmen in goal-scoring (13) and seventh in points (33). He was Hockey East’s top scoring freshman and led all defenders with 23 points. He was the first freshman in UMass program history to reach 30 points in his freshman season, and only the fourth Minuteman to do so (fellow freshman Ryan Ufko also reached the 30-point mark later in the season).
Minnesota State goalie Dryden McKay won the Hobey Baker Award on Friday, and he’ll look to lead the Mavericks to their first-ever national championship on Saturday when they face Denver in the national title game at the TD Garden in Boston.
