GREENFIELD — Two women were airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with serious injuries Friday afternoon after Greenfield Police Detective Timothy Cooley said a dark gray SUV or truck struck them on Country Club Road near the intersection of Brookside Avenue before fleeing.

Greenfield and Bernardston Police, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted American Medical Response (AMR) ambulances and the Greenfield Fire Department as two women lying on the side of the road — one only a few feet away from her motorized wheelchair — were lifted onto stretchers.

Cooley said both women were “seriously injured,” at the time police arrived, though he said one was stable. He said ambulances initially transported the women to Baystate Franklin Medical Center before they were transferred to the Springfield hospital.

Jamie Roberts, a neighbor of one of the victims, said she ran outside her house when she heard a loud crash, her neighbor scream and her neighbor’s dog whimpering.

“I heard a screech like something slammed into something,” Roberts said. “First thing I heard was the dog yipping and yelling, and I thought, ‘Oh God, a dog just got run over,’ and then I heard the lady screaming.”

Cooley said Greenfield Police are doing everything they can to find the vehicle involved in the hit and run.

“We’re doing the best we can and this is part of an ongoing investigation,” he said.
