GREENFIELD — Two newcomers will join the School Committee as Ann Childs and Stacey Sexton secured seats alongside incumbent School Committee Chair Amy Proietti following Tuesday’s city election.

Voters were asked to decide on a four-way contest for three seats on the School Committee. Names on the ballot included Proietti, Childs, Sexton and Marina Leonovich. School Committee members Jean Wall and Susan Eckstrom did not run for reelection. The committee seats carry four-year terms.

Childs, Sexton and Proietti received 2,505, 2,416 and 2,059 votes, respectively, compared to Leonovich’s 1,305 votes, according to unofficial election results.

The election, which also included contested races for mayor, City Council and the Board of Assessors, took place Tuesday at Greenfield High School.

Childs, 38, a professional literary critic, previously said she plans to use the platform to advocate at the state level for school funding. She also plans to work with the schools on improving communication with the community, especially over the next few years, as the district looks at the possibility of redrawing the map and moving eighth grade into the middle school and fifth grade into the elementary school.

“I was amazed by how nice everyone was,” Childs said, reflecting on the race following her victory. “We’ve got a lot of people who all want what’s best for Greenfield schools and I hope I’m able to live up to what they hope I can do.”

Proietti, 51, has two children in the school system and a 30-year background in education, particularly in residential life/housing and financial aid. In the nearly four years she has served, Proietti said she’s proud of the progress the School Committee has made in its ability to make the budget more accessible to the general public.

“I’m very humbled and honored that people would trust me with their vote,” Proietti said upon learning of her victory. “School Committee is serious business and I’m honored to be reelected and will continue to work.”

Sexton, 33, who has worked in education research and evaluation for nearly a decade, previously said they would like to see more collaboration between the school and the city. Sexton also hopes to see the School Committee tap into new local resources and strengthen existing partnerships with various nonprofits and political entities.
