SHUTESBURY — Two newcomers will join the School Committee after winning the only contested seats in Saturday’s town election.

Jeremy Mailloux and Anna Cederberg Heard, with 237 and 205 votes, earned election over Nathaniel Charles Longcope and Mary Lou Conca, who trailed with 99 and 59 votes, respectively.

Incumbents who ran unopposed are returning to the remaining positions, including Rita Farrell to a three-year seat on the Selectboard; Norene Pease and Garrett Simonsen to three-year positions on the Board of Health; Walter Tibbetts to a three-year seat on the Cemetery Commission; Melanie DeSilva and Patricia S. Oullette to three-year terms as library trustees; Deacon Bonnar, Steven H. Bressler and Michael Joseph DeChiara to three-year terms on the Planning Board, and Grace Bannasch to a three-year term as town clerk.

Bannasch reported that 340 ballots were cast, representing a 23% turnout of the town’s 1,516 registered voters.

Mailloux and Heard are replacing School Committee Chair Dan Hayes, who has served for two decades, and member Steve Sullivan, who has served nearly 10 years. The two did not seek reelection and were recognized for their time on the School Committee during Saturday’s Annual Town Meeting, when they were given T-shirts, bags and water bottles by Shutesbury Elementary School Principal Jacqueline Mendonsa.
