NEW SALEM — Two people were sent to the hospital late Monday afternoon after a pickup truck collided with a smaller car and rolled over on Route 202.

First responders were notified of the accident, which happened about an eighth of a mile north of the Moosehorn Road intersection, at about 5:30 p.m., according to Joe Cuneo, chief of both the New Salem and Wendell fire departments.

The accident was caused when the pick-up truck’s driver became distracted and “crossed over the yellow line and went up onto the embankment,” Cuneo said.

The driver of the pickup truck was transported to the hospital, as well as one of the two people in the smaller vehicle it collided with. Cuneo did not know the severity of their injuries.

Both vehicles were severely damaged, Cuneo said.

The Orange and New Salem fire departments responded, as well as an ambulance from Athol, Cuneo said. The Jaws of Life were initially requested, but were not used.
