NORTHFIELD — A man and woman were injured Thursday afternoon following a two-vehicle crash on Millers Falls Road (Route 63) involving a FedEx truck.

Officers were dispatched at around 3 p.m. to the area of 189 Millers Falls Road, according to Northfield Police Officer Oleg Cobileanschi. The incident was initially reported as a crash with possible entrapment.

“Upon arrival, all occupants were out of the [pickup truck],” Cobileanschi said. “After further investigation, it was determined the driver of the FedEx truck was not inside of the truck when the collision happened.”

Both vehicles were facing southbound on Route 63 when the pickup truck collided with the back end of the FedEx truck, according to Cobileanschi. The FedEx driver was out of the vehicle making deliveries at the time of the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. His female passenger, however, sustained more severe injuries and was transported by ambulance to a landing zone at Greenfield Middle School, where she was airlifted for medical treatment.

The road was closed and reopened about an hour and a half later by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to Cobileanschi.
