WORCESTER — Turners Falls High School just moved into elite company.

The Indians won their Massachusetts record-tying eighth state softball championship and earned back-to-back crowns with a 2-0 victory over Austin Preparatory School in the MIAA Division III title game Saturday at Rockwood Field.

Turners (24-1) moved into a tie with Bishop Fenwick High School of Peabody for the most state softball titles in Massachusetts history (the Crusaders won eight consecutive Division I titles from 1990-97).

Indians senior right-handed pitcher Mackenzie Phillips closed out a brilliant career by throwing a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and no walks.

Cougars sophomore pitcher Logan MacDonald was just as impressive, firing a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and just one free pass.

Turners scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third inning. MacDonald struck out the first two batters, then got the leadoff hitter Aly Murphy to hit a routine ground ball to third for what appeared to be a routine 1-2-3 inning. However, third baseman Francesca Fralick rushed the throw and it sailed over first baseman Kylie Currier’s head. Murphy immediately turned and raced to second, sliding in safely ahead of the high throw.

Senior second baseman Jenna Putala made them pay for the miscue, as she hit a rocket down the left-field line that reached the fence for a double to plate Murphy standing up and give the Indians a 1-0 lead.

Putala moved to third on a passed ball, then Gabby Arzuaga hit a routine grounder that Liana Tamagna bobbled, which allowed Arzuaga to reach first and Putala to score the second run.

From there, Phillips retired 12 of the final 13 batters she faced and struck out the final two swinging, including Rebecca Lowe to end it.

The North Sectional champion Cougars finished their season 22-4.
