GREENFIELD — A Connecticut man facing a charge of attempted sexual assault was arrested on Route 2 last week after a state trooper learned the vehicle he was riding in was unregistered.

Carlos Davila, 20, of New London, Connecticut, pleaded not guilty in Greenfield District Court to single counts of illegal possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition without an FID card, furnishing a false name to police, receiving stolen property, carrying a loaded firearm and improper storage of a firearm. He was ordered held on $10,000 bail.

Additionally, Nathan Hazlett, 49, of Brattleboro, Vermont, who was driving the vehicle stopped by State Police, was arrested for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and a motor vehicle equipment violation. He pleaded not guilty and was released on personal recognizance.

According to State Police, Trooper Scott Boutell was on Route 2, prior to Interstate 91 in Greenfield, commuting to his patrol area shortly before 11 p.m. on Nov. 22 when he conducted a random computer inquiry on a Nissan Maxima with Pennsylvania license plates. Boutell learned the vehicle’s registration hadn’t been active since January 2021 and he initiated a traffic stop. While the car was pulling over, he observed a rear-seat passenger moving around in a strange manner.

Upon approaching the vehicle, Boutwell discovered that Hazlett is not licensed to drive. Additional troopers arrived to assist, conducting an inventory of the car’s contents before it was towed.

According to State Police, troopers allegedly located multiple used syringes and other paraphernalia used in the consumption of illegal drugs. Troopers also found a loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson pistol inside of a fanny pack under the seat of a passenger identified as Davila. None of the vehicle’s occupants were licensed to possess firearms. An inquiry of the firearm’s serial number revealed it was reported in Vermont.

Davila and Hazlett were arrested and taken to the State Police’s Shelburne Falls barracks for booking. The vehicle’s third occupant was released from the scene without charges. At the barracks, troopers learned Davila initially provided a false name to them, then located the arrest warrant out of Connecticut.

Davila and Hazlett are scheduled to be back in court on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
