High school track: Three athletes headed to Bangor, Maine for New Englands; many shine at MSTCA Heptathlon-Decathlon

Three local track athletes will get the chance to test themselves against the best New England has to offer on Saturday. 

Mohawk Trail’s Emmett Johnson and Frontier’s Caroline Crocker and Ayla Starr are in the field for the New England Interscholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championship, which gets going on Saturday in Bangor, Maine.

Johnson qualified in the mile, where he is the 12th seed after a top run of four minutes, 18.76 seconds. Johnson placed fifth in the event at the MIAA Meet of Champions last week at Fitchburg State. 

Crocker also walked away with a fifth place finish at the Meet of Champions last week, doing so in the 100-meter hurdles. Her finish qualified her for New Englands, where she is the 15th seed with a top run of 15.28 seconds.

Fellow Redhawk Ayla Starr also walked away with a fifth place finish at the Meet of Champions, with the senior competing in the pole vault. She too qualified for New Englands, where she’ll be the 14th seed with a top vault of 10 feet, six inches.

MSTCA Heptathlon/Decathlon

Several local track teams got together on Monday and Tuesday at Frontier Regional for the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association (MSTCA) West Heptathlon-Decathlon.

Crocker placed second overall in the heptathlon with 3,500 points, with fellow Redhawk Nicole Plasse taking 10th with 2,753 points. Mohawk Trail’s Zephyr Jetzon placed 11th (2,731), Frontier’s Abigail Howard came in 15th (2,598), Warrior Emily Sisum took 23rd (2,291) and Mohawk Trail’s Sophia Slocik-Gritzner came in 29th (1,920).  

South Hadley’s Emma Sanford was the overall winner with 4,413 points.

In the boys decathlon Frontier’s Erich Brown placed fifth with 4,783 points. Mahar’s Mitchell Krasco took 10th (4,358), Redhawk Ian Burt came in 17th (3,953) and Frontier’s Luke Howard took 19th (3,772). Southwick’s Matt Coviello was the overall champion with 5,211 points. 

In the individual races, Crocker placed 10th in the girls 200 (28.48) while Jetzon earned 13th (28.71). Howard placed second in the girls 800 (2:33.84), Plasse came in third (2:34.93), Frontier’s Claire McFarland came in eighth (2:42.92) and Sisum placed 13th (2:46.63). In the girls 100 hurdles Crocker took second (15.89), Redhawk Hannah Davis finished in sixth (18.05) and Jetzon earned 12th (19.02). 

In the girls high jump Crocker came in fifth (1.4 meters) and Davis tied for 14th (1.3). Crocker finished in fourth in the girls long jump (4.76 meters) while Plasse and Jetzon tied for seventh (4.55). In the girls shot put Crocker took fourth (7.34 meters), Slocik-Gritzner came in fifth (7.1), Howard took eighth (6.91) and Sisum placed 14th (6.38) and in the girls javelin, Crocker placed fourth (26.11 meters), Slocik-Gritzner and Sisum tied for ninth (19.25) and McFarland took 15th (17.61). 

Over in the boys’ races, Krasco placed 13th in the 100 (12.23) while Redhawk Adrien Pazmandy took 15th (12.41). Pazmandy took third in the 400 (54.26) while Burt came in 10th (56.33), Brown took 11th (56.33) and Aidan Valderamma earned 14th (57.12). Frontier’s Luke Howard was the winner in the 1500 (4:25.09) while Brown came in seventh (4:45.3) and Valderrama placed 11th (4:58.86). 

In the 110 hurdles Krasco came in sixth (17.17) and Brown finished in 11th (18.75). Brown tied for second in the high jump (1.75 meters) while Howard came in seventh (1.65) and Krasco and Valderrama tied for 10th (1.6). Brown finished in third (5.71 meters), Krasco took seventh (5.43) and Burt placed ninth (5.33) in the long jump. 

Krasco was the winner in the triple jump (12.5 meters) while Burt took eighth (11.43) and Brown came in ninth (11.13). Redhawk Alex Schreiber came in third in the shot put (11.64) while Pazmandy placed 12th (9.2) and Howard earned 13th (8.96). Schreiber won the discus (35.95 meters) while Brown took seventh (25.48), Pazmandy came in 12th (22.85) and Howard finished in 13th (22.8). In the javelin Brown placed sixth (32.45 meters) and Howard finished in 11th (30.78).
