LEYDEN — A town-wide cleanup is being held Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Volunteers are asked to RSVP to Robin Neipp at 413-624-5512.

Weather permitting, volunteers will meet at Town Hall at 9 a.m. for doughnuts and coffee, and then disperse to cover different parts of the town. At noon the Leyden Police Department will have a cookout with hamburgers and hotdogs.

People who aren’t available on Saturday but want to help can talk to Neipp about cleaning up a road on their own, so that volunteers Saturday will have less work to do.

Neipp said that Leyden has a huge littering problem. She attributes it mostly to drivers passing through town and throwing beer cans and fast food containers out the window.

“There’s enough trash that it makes a difference when we pick it up,” she said.

In the past Leyden had a yearly town cleanup day, but it stopped about 15 years ago. Neipp began organizing it again four years ago, she said. That year, volunteers found fridges and couches that had been dumped around town. Since then, it's been mostly roadside trash, Neipp said.
