GREENFIELD — The corner of Silver and High streets will soon be the home of a Town Fair Tire location, with the Northeast chain business expecting to open its 113th store by mid- to late August.

The company went through the typical permitting process with the city and will set up shop on the former site of Art’s Tire and Common Ground Fitness Center. Town Fair Tire, based in East Haven, Connecticut, bought the longtime tire store for $708,000 and the fitness facility — part of the Art’s Tire property — for $236,000, according to the Franklin County Registry of Deeds. The tire store, which was founded in 1945, closed and is being renovated but the fitness center was demolished. It has moved to 369 Federal St., Suite B, though it has not yet opened in that spot.

Mike Barbaro, senior vice president of Town Fair Tire, said the company serves as its own general contractor, with in-house staffers handling construction projects. Subcontractors were hired to deal with electrical work, sprinkler installation and other necessities. He noted the building is quite large, spanning about 16,000 square feet.

“We will probably use 8,000 square feet of it,” he mentioned, adding that the store will likely hire 10 employees and will prioritize local residents in the selection process.

Barbaro said Town Fair Tire locations sell, change and repair tires and wheels, and can handle alignments. No automotive repairs are offered.

The two other closest Town Fair Tire branches are in Keene, New Hampshire, and Northampton.

“It’s going to kind of be right between the two of them,” Barbaro said.

Town Fair Tire was founded in 1967 and has locations in all six New England states and New York. More information is available at townfairtire.com.
