NORTHFIELD — A house fire at 121 West Northfield Road Friday night resulted in no injuries and was quickly extinguished after it burned two second-floor bedrooms.

According to Fire Chief Floyd “Skip” Dunnell III, the cause is still under investigation. At this time, the fire is considered accidental.

“There is nothing malicious or suspicious,” Dunnell said.

While the couple who rents the house and their dog are displaced, Dunnell said they have secured temporary living arrangements.

According to Dunnell, the house is owned by Andy Kazanowski, and it has been in the family for three generations. Dunnell did not know if the homeowner has insurance, but said repairs were already underway Monday morning.

As part of the investigation, Dunnell said the Fire Department examined the ceiling light fixtures in the bedroom and cleaning materials located nearby. He said the fire began in the corner of the front bedroom where the tenants were storing family memorabilia, including items from one tenant’s grandfather.

“There were military records and other items,” Dunnell said. “Some of them were saved.”

Dunnell said the call came in at around 9:45 p.m. Friday night. Being out of the hydrant district in town, the Northfield Fire Department requested mutual aid. Firefighters from Bernardston, Erving, Hinsdale, N.H. and Vernon, N.H. responded. The Gill Fire Department provided coverage at the Northfield Fire Station and the Greenfield Fire Department served as the rapid intervention team (RIT).

“The fire started in one bedroom and spread to the second, but we confined it to the two bedrooms,” Dunnell noted.

He said the fire was extinguished in roughly half an hour, though firefighters stayed until 1:30 a.m. to make sure everything was safe.

“Just a couple hours earlier I had my crews down in Leverett,” Dunnell said of the Friday evening call.

All weekend, members of the Northfield Fire Department assisted with battling a large brush fire that began on Joshua Hill in Leverett Thursday morning.
