Full-day Preschool Openings: The Y has a few mid-year openings for its full-day preschool. There are two classrooms; one for 3 to 4 year olds and another for 4 to 5 year olds. There are two day (Tuesday and Thursday) and five day options available. The students get to use the gym, pool and gymnastics center for weekly P.E. options. Winter Weight Loss Program starts today: The Y’s staff knows how hard it can be to lose weight and they can help you learn how to exercise properly, eat right and maintain strength and stamina throughout the process. Our accountability coaches will lead you in the right direction. Make your own team (of 4) or we will team you up. The team with the most bonus points, and percentage of body weight lost, will win a cash prize. Weight loss challenges have included workout bingo, scheduled treadmill interval sessions, healthy cooking classes, nutritional seminars and more. This weight loss challenge includes pre-kickoff fitness intakes (initial weigh-in, body measuring, BMI and body fat percentage); nine weeks of support from our accountability coaches; teams of four which equals support; weekly weigh-in/food journaling for bonus points; required cardio and strength-training sessions each week and prizes for the winning team. Begins today, Monday, Jan. 30. Fees (for 9-week program) are $109 for gold members, $125 for silver members and $170 for non-members. Middle School Basketball: YMCA middle school basketball league is open to boys and girls in grades 5 to 8 who want to further develop skills and play more competitively. Players will participate in basketball workouts where they will fine tune fundamentals and learn advanced basketball techniques and offenses. Starts Tuesday, Feb. 27, and runs for six weeks. Practice is on Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m., and scrimmages on Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. Potential games on Sundays with other YMCAs; times to be determined. Pain Pals of Franklin County: This is a chronic pain support group that meets on Wednesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the YMCA conference room. Meet with others who suffer from chronic pain in a safe and supportive environment. Participation is free and open to the community. Birthday Party Options: The Y has nine birthday party options offered at 14 different times each week for children ages 1 to 14. The party options are swimming, scuba, game room, inflatable obstacle course, Gaga ball, climbing wall, gymnastics center, gym games and the all new ninja challenge. The Y has three rooms for the cake/present portion of the parties. Call 773-3646, ext. 447, to schedule a party.

Community Wellness Programs for people with Parkinson’s Disease: Under the guidance of a licensed physical therapist, participants will learn an exercise program specifically designed to meet the needs of persons with Parkinson’s disease; problem-solving approaches that can help you more effectively manage challenges you may experience related to daily mobility; and strategies to help manage your health more effectively. Evaluation sessions will be scheduled before and after the program. Measurements will be taken at these times to help show your progress from the start to the end of the program.
