TURNERS FALLS — With the return of Charley’s Tropical Bar and Chess Club at the Shea Theater Arts Center on Saturday, locals once again have a chance to detach from the baggage of everyday life.

“Welcome to Charley’s — a cozy, one-night-only escape from your present-day cares,” John Bechtold, creator of the “immersive” theater experience and pop-up bar, said in an event announcement.

Charley’s Tropical Bar and Chess Club, hosted by Eggtooth Productions, returns to the Shea on Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. after being held for the first time in February. The event features beer, wine and tropical mocktails; music; cozy meetings over chess games; and “an unexpected journey into the mind” of Charley, “the friendly but quiet founder,” according to Eggtooth Productions.

“With a bar menu crafted by expert mixologist Sam Perry, Charley’s has something for everyone: top-shelf drinks, cozy corners and a vibrant social scene,” Bechtold detailed. “Charley’s exists in a time before cellphones, so enjoy the escape from those objects, too, for the night, as you make new friends, be that over a chess board or a Mai Tai — or both.”

Attendees may spend their evening at the bar, playing chess or working on a puzzle that “lies hidden in the space that, when solved, sends you on a special escapade that connects you more closely to Charley,” Bechtold noted. He described this “little adventure” as a “theatrical journey” for participants looking for more action.

Linda McInerney, artistic director for Eggtooth Productions, said while the inaugural event in February was “fantastic,” this reprisal is slated to be even better.

“When we do these immersive experiences, when we repeat them, we deepen and expand them,” she assured.

McInerney said this expansion pertains not only to the drink offerings, which have improved due to the Shea Theater acquiring a full liquor license, but also to the “journey.” While she was reluctant to disclose too much about what this journey will entail, McInerney emphasized that those who embark on it will have the agency to sculpt a custom experience.
