Mahar boys outlast archrival Athol

FITCHBURG — A summer league game at Monty Tech had a little extra edge on Thursday night.

The Mahar Regional boys team outlasted Athol High School, 48-41. The Senators went on a 15-2 run midway through the second half to secure the win.

“My regulars were focused on not losing to Athol,” Mahar coach Enver Softic said. “The intensity rose. I didn't have to say a thing. The red shirts were all they needed to see.”

During the run, Mahar left its first team out on the floor for some extra minutes.

Matt Lyesiuk and Aden Santana helped Mahar stretch out the lead. Lyesiuk did it from the 3-point line while Santana did his damage near the rim.

Santana was Mahar's leading scorer with with 13 points. Lyesiuk scored 12 points on three 3-pointers.

The game featured some verbal interactions between players, as well as a head-first dive for a loose ball by Athol's Riley Paine. He finished with 9 points on three 3-pointers.

Jake Tenney's bucket near the rim gave Mahar a 44-30 lead.

The Senators did have to survive a late run by the Red Raiders. A 3-pointer by Paine cut the lead to 46-41 with under a minute to play.

Charlie Barnes' free throws on the ensuing possession clinched the victory for Mahar.

Noah Pottinger scored 10 points for the Red Raiders while Mark Ferrari finished with nine.

Keene Summer League

Courtney Page's double-double helped the Mahar Regional girls summer league team beat Pioneer Valley Regional, 33-17, on Thursday in Keene, N.H.

Page had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Micalyn Mailloux added 10 points for the Senators (4-2).

Alina Cecunjanin scored 11 points for the Panthers. Paige Loughman chipped in with six points.

In the junior varsity game, Haylee Allen's game-winner gave Mahar a 16-14 win over Pioneer in overtime.

Allen (10 rebounds) got the hoop after working the glass for an offensive rebound with 30 seconds left.

Emma Bacigalupo led Mahar with seven points.
