Jon Mahony advanced to the quarterfinals for the Mahar Regional wrestling team at the MIAA All-State tournament on Friday in Methuen.
Mahony defeated No. 12 John Santos of Stoughton in the round of 16 with a pin in the second round. Mahony fell to Nicholas Curley of Saint John’s Prep in quarterfinals by technical fall (25-7).
The fifth-seeded Mahony won in the consolation bracket, and is currently in the quarterfinals with a chance for third or fourth place.
Franklin Tech’s Peter Saladino, seeded 18th, fell in the round of 32 in the 126-pound bracket to No. 15 David Gelman of Sharon by an 8-5 decision.
Saladino then faced Zach Lupiani of Mount Everett in the consolation bracket, losing by fall (3:40).
Mahar’s Henry Gilmore, seeded 17th, also lost in the round of 32, falling to West Springfield’s Eric Bergeron by a 10-4 decision in the 152-pound weight class.
Gilmore fell in the consolation round of eight by fall.
Franklin Tech’s Kyle Brunelle beat Winchester’s Elias Kourafolos 11-2 in round of 32 at 138.
Brunelle lost in the next round to top-seeded Rawson Iwanicki by major decision (12-1).
Brunelle took a loss by decision in the consolation bracket.
Peter Tattan of Mahar beat Joe Wiley of Hingham in round of 32 by fall (2:45).
Tattan followed with a 7-0 decision loss to CJ Glaropoulos of Mansfield.
Tattan fell by decison in the consolation bracket, after picking up another win in the opening round.
Girls All States TournamentMahar’s Ava Chiodo defeated Tanisha Whiteside of Taunton in the first round by fall at the 1:42 mark at 113 pounds.
Chiodo has a match today in the semifinals.
Anaray Yang pinned Denali Figueroa of Chicopee at the 4:20 mark in the third round at 120.
Yang is still alive with a match in the quarterfinals today.
Mahar’s Sophia Whitman will wrestle in the semifinals at 129 pounds after taking advantage of a forfeit in the round of 16.
