NORTHFIELD — Throughout the lasting pandemic, churches and other organizations have worked to transform events and community meals so they can continue to bring neighbors together, while also practicing social distancing.

Members of St. Patrick’s Church hope to keep this neighborly spirit alive with a drive-thru version of their annual German Pork Roast Supper on Saturday, Oct. 17.

According to meal organizer and head cook Andrea Dale, vehicles will be guided in a “U” path as they arrive for the carryout meals. Served at 5 p.m., the meal will consist of German pork roast, sauerkraut and apples, homemade apple sauce, squash and roasted potatoes. Dessert will include cookies and brownies.

“Personally, I think it’s a great meal, but I’m the one cooking it and it’s my German grandmother’s recipe,” Dale said with a chuckle.

The meal costs $12 for adults and $6 for children, or $30 for a family, with proceeds benefiting St. Patrick’s Church. The fundraising dinner will be helpful, Dale said, as expenses to run the church and programs have remained while attendance has thinned during the pandemic.

Walk-ins — or in this case, drive-ins — are welcome, but reservations are encouraged. Parties can call ahead at 413-498-2728 or email stpatricksrcc@gmail.com.

St. Patrick’s Church plans to serve roughly 60 people, Dale said, and as of last week, 35 people had signed up. Those who do not sign up in advance will be served on a first come, first served basis until meals run out.

Dale said she expects to see fellow parishioners who haven’t felt comfortable attending services indoors, as well as neighbors who are not members of St. Patrick’s, but are seeking community connection and a hot meal.

“I’m happy to see everybody,” she said.
