SOUTH DEERFIELD — The treasurer of a local condominium association has been charged with embezzlement after police say she stole more than $18,000 from the association’s bank account.

Jeanne E. Grover, 46, of South Deerfield was arraigned in Greenfield District Court this week on charges of fiduciary embezzlement and larceny over $250 after she allegedly stole $18,173 from the Stillwater Condominium Association’s bank account.

According to a report by Deerfield Police Officer Adam Sokoloski, a representative of the Stillwater Condominium Association came to the police station on Sept. 20 after being contacted by Greenfield Savings Bank, which reported suspicious activity pertaining to one of the association’s bank accounts. Greenfield Savings Bank’s fraud and theft prevention officer reported that $18,173 had been transferred out of the account since Dec. 31, 2016.

Sokoloski wrote that no votes were taken by the association to authorize the transfers, and only Grover — the association’s treasurer — and the representative who reported the alleged crime had access to the account. During the association’s last meeting in December 2016, when the operating budget was passed, the association had $16,874 divided into three bank accounts, according to the report.

“Currently the association only has approximately $2,000 in all of its bank accounts combined. With a total operating budget for 2017 of $31,831, this is a catastrophic theft from the Stillwater Condominium Association,” Sokoloski wrote, adding there is probable cause to think that Grover embezzled the money by transferring it out of the Greenfield Savings Bank account — either to hide it or for her own use.

Grover was arrested on a warrant Sept. 21. She was released on $500 cash bail following her arraignment and is due back in court Nov. 2 for a pretrial conference.
