Talk on Battle of Bloody Brook set for Sept. 17

SOUTH DEERFIELD — Local historian Peter Thomas is hosting a lecture on the Battle of Bloody Brook on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. in Frontier Regional School’s auditorium.

Thomas will share information about one of the most significant moments in the early stages of King Philip’s War, where an Indigenous war party ambushed and destroyed an English convoy delivering crop harvests from Pocumtuck (now Deerfield) to Hadley. This loss, among others, elicited an aggressive English response, later leading to the Great Falls Massacre that marked a turning point in the war in favor of the colonists.

Refreshments will be served.

Author Gary Wilson presenting book ‘Moonlight Visions’

WHATELY — Resident Gary Wilson will present a program and sign copies of “Moonlight Visions,” his new novel that was published this summer, at the First Congregational Church of Whately, 177 Chestnut Plain Road, on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m.

“Moonlight Visions” is a collection of tales arranged in prose and verse that came to Wilson in his dreams. Story settings range from foreign countries to fantasy worlds.

“Readers will be entertained by shapeshifters, magic pills, the keyhole of frightening visions, and even swept away to the Far East and Africa for adventure,” according to church Minister Cynthia Crosson, who also wrote the book’s foreword.

“Moonlight Visions” is available at Greenfield’s World Eye Bookshop, Boswell’s Books in Shelburne Falls and Amherst Books, as well as garywilsonbooks.net and other online retailers.
