Mt. Toby Concerts presents Heather Pierson, Leah Boyd

LEVERETT — Mount Toby Concerts is welcoming Peaceful Means, a new musical duo comprised of Leah Boyd and Heather Pierson, for a July 15 concert at 4 p.m. at 194 Long Plain Road (Route 63).

Boyd and Pierson are drawing on their years of friendship to create and share new music celebrating the joy, peace and connection that are available in every moment. The artists will weave together original songs and covers using piano, acoustic strings and percussion.

A suggested donation of $15 to $25 is requested. Tickets can be reserved by emailing diacrowe@yahoo.com or 413-835-1695.

Former chief’s wife honored by Friends of Deerfield

SOUTH DEERFIELD — During the town’s 350th anniversary parade, the procession was briefly stopped to celebrate the birthday of June Rosenthal, the wife of former Police Chief James Rosenthal, who died 12 years ago.

Friends of Deerfield President Alex Herchenreder and Clerk Stan Adams presented Rosenthal with a bouquet of flowers, 350th merchandise and a sign created by her granddaughter to mark 12 years since James Rosenthal’s death. Her husband worked for the Deerfield Police Department for 25 years.

Historic Deerfield appoints Whitley as curator of historic textiles, clothing

DEERFIELD — Historic Deerfield has tapped Lauren Whitley as its curator of historic textiles and clothing.

Whitley worked for many years as the senior curator in the department of textile and fashion arts at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and received the honorary designation of senior curator emerita in 2020. While at the Museum of Fine Arts, Whitley curated several exhibits, including “Fabric of a Nation: American Quilt Stories” and “Hippie Chic,” which were both accompanied by publications.

Most recently, Whitley worked as an independent curator on collection and exhibition issues with museums across the country, according to Historic Deerfield. She has also taught textile and history classes at New England universities.

One of her first orders of business at Historic Deerfield will be a reconceived installation plan for the Helen Geier Flynt Textile Gallery in the Flynt Center of Early New England Life.

Two local students named to dean’s list honors atQuinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. — Two local students were named to Quinnipiac University’s dean’s list for the spring semester.

Deerfield resident Camryn Howe was named to the dean’s list and Whately resident Rebecca Felton was named to the dean’s list with honors. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must complete at least 14 credits in a semester and earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 with no grade lower than a C.

Shutesbury police chief to present safety talk July 13

SHUTESBURY — Police Chief Kristin Burgess will present an informational program on safety awareness and self-protection at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, at Shutesbury Community Church.

According to statistics from the state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, violent crime in Massachusetts increased 8% from 2020 to 2022. Sexual assault increased by more than 7% during that period while aggravated assault increased almost 9%.

Burgess said women are especially encouraged to attend the program as 90% of sexual assault victims and nearly half of aggravated assault victims are female. However, the program will include information on personal safety, self-protection and self-defense that will benefit everyone, male and female. The public is invited and refreshments will be served.

The program is part of an ongoing series of public service and educational programs hosted by Shutesbury Community Church.
