SHUTESBURY — Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito was on hand at Town Hall on Thursday when Shutesbury became the 302nd municipality in the state to sign a Community Compact, an agreement between the Baker-Polito Administration and individual cities and towns that agree to implement at least one best practice they select from an array of disciplines.

“And it’s official,” Polito said after Selectboard member Timothy Logan signed the document at 12:32 p.m. following her own signature. Shutesbury Town Administrator Rebecca Torres, Town Clerk Susan Mosher and Administrative Secretary Linda Avis Scott were also present.

Torres said signing the Community Compact means the town will receive $26,000 to consult with a hydrologist who will test Shutesbury’s water supply. Town officials also aim to develop best practices for limiting salt contamination in the water.

“There are a number of different areas where it’s happened,” Torres said.

Polito said there is a benefit to every community that signs a Community Compact.

“The 302 communities represent more than 700 best practice projects throughout the Commonwealth ranging across 10 subject matters,” she said, adding that the subject matters include financial management, budgeting, energy efficiencies and infrastructure audits. “The collection of best practices embedding in local government across the Commonwealth is strengthening local government and municipal services.”

Polito is a lifelong resident of the central Massachusetts town of Shrewsbury, which she joked is often misheard as Shutesbury. She previously served in the state House of Representatives for 10 years.

Gov. Charlie Baker’s first executive order, signed in January 2015, established the Community Compacts. More information about Community Compacts can be found at http://bit.ly/2xEoOnv
