SHELBURNE — With support from family members and friends, Shelburne resident Prudence Wholey raised more than $2,000 to support the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts last fall. It’s a figure she hopes to top this year.

Wholey’s fundraiser is part of the annual Monte’s March, a 43-mile walk from Springfield to Greenfield led by WRSI The River radio host Christopher “Monte” Belmonte that raises money for the food bank. As part of her effort, Wholey embarks on her own 6-mile mini march.

While being inspired to raise money for “a very good cause,” Wholey said she also enjoys the march itself. She recounted how she was joined by relatives and friends for last year’s walk, including her grandnephews, who brought a pail to collect cash donations from passersby.

“We had a good time,” she said. “The first day was rainy, but we made it.”

Come Monday, when Monte’s March embarks from Springfield, Wholey and the fellow participants in her mini march will leave from her barn at 314 Zerah Fiske Road at 10 a.m. The walk will head down Bardwells Ferry Road and South Shelburne Road before turning back. The route is approximately 4 miles.

On Tuesday, Wholey and company will once again leave from Zerah Fiske Road, head down South Shelburne Road and turn onto Lucy Fiske Road before ending back on Zerah Fiske Road. The loop is about 2 miles long.

While walkers will accept donations on the road, Wholey also has an online fundraising page set up through Monte’s March, which can be accessed at pledgereg.com/314409. Those who prefer to mail checks can make them out to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, and mail them to Prudence Wholey, 314 Zerah Fiske Road, Shelburne, MA 01370. She advises donors to put “Farmer Prudy” in the memo line.
