BERNARDSTON — The Bernardston Senior Center will host a “Red, White (Haired) and Blue” drive-thru barbecue this weekend, with music from local disc jockey “Bobby C” Campbell.

The free event will be held at the Senior Center at the Powers Institute building on Saturday starting at noon and ending when food runs out. Senior Center Director Hayley Bolton said the center wants to make the event open and fun, and is thus waiving the meal fee, but donations are welcome.

The event is sponsored by the Bernardston Police Department and Bernardston Fire Department, whose members will help cook Saturday. Bolton said the Bernardston Veterans Organization is donating the grill for the day.

“It’ll be about as Bernardston as I think it can get,” Bolton said.

The meal — which will be brought to residents’ vehicles in to-go containers — will include chicken thighs “slathered” in Chubby’s Sauce, with sides of baked beans, coleslaw and cornbread from Sweet Lucy’s Bakeshop. Patrons can also purchase beer from Hitchcock Brewing Co. or Building 8 Brewing for $2, and water or soda for $1.

Bolton said the Senior Center received positive feedback from those who attended a recent concert on the lawn, and the center wanted to host another fun, community event.

“We want it to be a little morale boost for anybody affected by the pandemic,” she said.

While there will be music for all to enjoy while waiting in line, Bolton said she encourages vehicles not to linger too long for the sake of traffic flow. Traffic will be directed to enter from Burrows Turnpike Road and exit via Library Street.

Bernardston residents who cannot attend the barbecue may call the Senior Center to inquire about delivery within town at 413-834-7200.

Other upcoming events

The Senior Center has also been hosting a pop-up food pantry for Bernardston senior households on the last Wednesday of each month. The next pantry will be July 29 at 4:30 p.m. Residents must call 413-834-7200 to sign up. Delivery is available for those who need it.

In addition, the center is continuing with its summer concert series, held each Monday. The next concert, on July 20, will see Fire Pond, the duo of Eveline MacDougall and Douglas Reid, perform on the Senior Center porch at 5 p.m. Attendees must call in advance to sign up.

For those looking to watch remotely, the concert will also be livestreamed via Zoom. The meeting ID is: 853 0306 0540.
