GILL — Photojournalist Joe Parzych returned to his roots on Friday, donating some of his photos to Gill Elementary School for the students to enjoy.

“We want to show kids how you can take a hobby and turn it into a career,” said Gill Elementary School Principal Walter Houston. “That is what is so impressive about Joe’s photography.”

Parzych recently wrapped up a solo photography exhibit at the Great Falls Discovery Center in Turners Falls. Titled “Photo Beat, Past and Present — Moving Forward in Time, Capturing of the Moment,” the exhibit gave Parzych a chance to share his unique perspective, as someone diagnosed with autism, on everyday places and objects.

He donated the photos from this exhibit to the school as a token of appreciation for his early education. The entire student body got to see the photos during the first all-school assembly of the year.

“I can’t wait to share all the photos with the students,” Houston said.

Some of the photos depict people boating on the Connecticut River, the Shady Glen diner in Turners Falls and the General Pierce Bridge, allowing the children to see there is art all around them. Parzych said he would like children to see his photos and be inspired to take their own.

Parzych noted he has deep roots in the area as his family has lived here for generations. His knowledge of the area is shown through his photos, giving new perspectives on everyday locations.

As a student with autism, Parzych said school was difficult for him, but he persevered with support from his family, especially his aunt who specializes in supporting children with disabilities.
