ORANGE — Police took to Facebook Tuesday to request the public’s help in searching for a missing 21-year-old man.

According to a post on the Orange Police Department’s page, the man’s name is Gabe, and he is autistic and non-verbal. Gabe left on foot from his house, in the North Main Street area near Dexter Street, Tuesday morning. He is described as being 5-foot-5, weighing about 200 pounds and having brown hair. He may be carrying a backpack, pillow and sleeping bag.

The department’s Facebook page asks residents to check their accessible garages and outbuildings, as well as check the footage from any security cameras. People are urged to call 978-544-2128 if they locate Gabe or if they are a friend of his and know where he might be.

As of around 5 p.m., local firefighters were searching the woods, and a command center for searchers was opened in the cafeteria at Dexter Park Innovation School. According to the post, two German Shepherds and a Bloodhound were brought in to help with tracking, and though the Massachusetts State Police air wing was unable to fly due to the weather, a drone was set to come from the Northampton Police Department.

“As much as we appreciate (residents) wanting to help, it is too dangerous,” the Orange Police Department’s post reads, referring to residents’ offers to help search. “(The firefighters) are trained to search in the dark, in frigid temperatures, and know what to do.”

Still, community members offered to bring the firefighters coffee and food in response to the Police Department’s news.
