Schools: Warriors hand Rams rare loss

While many area field hockey fans likely had their eyes on another local matchup Friday afternoon involving two of the top programs in the Franklin County, Mohawk Trail Regional High School was continuing to quietly move itself into the narrative as a top program in western Mass.

The Warriors have been among the hottest teams in western Mass. and continued their postseason positioning Friday afternoon by handing Bi-County League-leading Southwick its first league loss of the season, 4-1, in Buckland.

Mohawk (11-5-0 overall, 6-3-0) jumped all over the Rams (13-2-1, 8-1-1) early, scoring twice in the first half and holding the Rams . Southwick did not get on the board until no time remained in the second half when Emily Martin scored on a corner.

Mya Lesieur staked the Warriors to a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the game and Caitlin Johnston got her first of the day later in the frame on an assist from Taylor Williams. Johnston got her second of the game three minutes into the second half — again on an assist from Williams — and Sidney Taylor closed out the scoring for Mohawk with 2 minutes, 30 seconds to play on an assist from Lesieur.

“I got outstanding play from seniors Shelby Sinistore and Caitlin Johnston today,” Mohawk coach Lynn Hoeppner said. “(Southwick) beat us early in the year when we still had not pulled it together, yet.”

Kordaryl Kendall made six saves to backstop the victory. Clare Stratton stopped three shots for Southwick.

Mahar 0, Palmer 0, tie — It was a one-sided game in favor of host Mahar, Friday afternoon in Orange, but Palmer goalie Rhea Dinelle proved to be a difference maker.

The netminder stopped all 19 shots she faced and the Panthers salvaged a 0-0 tie with the Senators.

Mahar held a 19-1 edge in shots. Bella Marigliano made one save in the Senators’ goal.

Pioneer 1, Holyoke 1 — Jennie Fuller notched a goal to help Pioneer secure a 1-1 tie with Holyoke High School in a Tri-County League field hockey match Friday afternoon in Northfield.

Athena Fowler-Shaw played well in net for Pioneer blocking five shots on the afternoon.

Belchertown 2, FC Tech 0 — Kaleigh Cooper and Arianna Piedra each scored goals as Belchertown High School defeated Franklin County Technical School 2-0 in a Tri-County League field hockey match Friday afternoon in Turners Falls.

After losing to the Orioles 5-1 the first time around, the Eagles managed to compile four shots to keep the game close. Kylee Baleno played well in net for Franklin Tech turning away six shots in the loss.

Girls volleyball

Mahar 3, Pioneer 0 — Aria Flematti entered the contest needing seven assists to reach 1000 for her career. The senior setter registered 11 in the contest to surpass the 1000 assist plateau and helped Mahar Regional School cruise to a 25-12, 25-11, 25-16 win over Pioneer in a Northern Division volleyball match Friday afternoon in Orange.

Flematti has been a four year starter for the Senators and has captained the team for the past two seasons.

“She is one of the hardest working players and has improved her play each and every year,” said Mahar coach Sarah Woodward. “She is constantly communicating out on the court and brings a positive attitude each and every game and she deserves to reach the 1000 career assist mark.”

Jordyn Berry also played well for the Senator registering six kills while teammate Ava Santana finished with five.

Avery Johnson led the way for Pioneer coming in with four aces, one assists, one kill, and three digs and Autumn Flagg recorded four assists and two kills. Cambria Johnson rounded out the scoring for Pioneer notching five assists, two kills and a dig.

Hopkington 3, Frontier 2 — Lauren Davenport belted 18 kills and the Red Hawks battled back to force a fifth set before falling to Division I powerhouse Hopkington High School 16-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-25, 15-10 in an independent volleyball match Friday afternoon in South Deerfield.

Olivia Deane added 14 kills of her own to go along with 19 digs for Frontier (16-2) while Elizabeth Fuqua dished out 29 assists in the loss.

Turners Falls 3, Greenfield 0 — Taylor Murphy blasted six kills and added 10 digs to help Turners Falls roll to a 25-11, 25-12, 25-14 win over Greenfield in a Northern Division volleyball match Friday night in Turners Falls.

Lindsay Whiteman added five aces for the Thunder and teammates Hannah Welles and Dabney Rollins finished with four kills a piece.

Ngawang Tridytsang recorded four aces, three digs and two kills for the Green Wave while Lexxie Rowell finished with three aces, five digs and seven assists and Denisse Montijo added four kills, three digs and three aces.

Duggan 3, FC Tech 1 — Summer Gaudreau had two aces, five kills, four digs, one block and one assist on Friday afternoon but Franklin Tech suffered a 26-24, 25-14, 15-25, 25-23 loss to Duggan Academy in a Metro Division match in Springfield.

Kelly Trudeau had six aces, one kill, one assist, two digs and two blocks in the loss, and Renee Reed finished with four kills, two aces, three digs and one assist.

Girls Soccer

Pioneer 3, Smith Voke 1 — Alina Cecunjanin scored a goal and assisted on another as Pioneer Valley Regional School pulled closer to a tournament berth as the Panthers downed Smith Vocational & Agricultural High School 3-1 in a Pioneer South girls soccer match Friday afternoon in Northfield.

Azemina Cecunjanin and Paige Loughman each tallied a score for the Panthers and Sammie Martinez added an assist. Leah Fuess earned the win in net for Pioneer turning away nine shots in the contest.

Stoneleigh-Burnham 2, Four Rivers 1 — Anna Goldstein scored a goal but Four Rivers Charter School fell 2-1 to Stoneleigh-Burnham School in a River Valley Athletic League girls soccer match Friday afternoon at Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield.

Liz Kingsley played well defensively for the Otters and Eolann McMillan added an assist.

Boys Soccer

Frontier 2, Chicopee 1 — Connor Bagdon broke a 1-1 tie in the 66th minute to lead Frontier to a huge 2-1 win over Chicopee High School in a Moriarty Division boys soccer match Friday night in Chicopee.

With the win over the division leaders, the Red Hawks now need a single point it their final three games to qualify for the postseason.

“This win sort of changes our viewpoint and our goals for the final three games of the season,” said Frontier head coach Evan Horton. “This win sort of puts us in the driver seat to win the league… I am really proud of the guys, they have really come together over the past week and we are playing our best soccer as we enter the final week and the final three games of the regular season.”

Ben Morse opened the scoring for Frontier in the 23rd minute on a long chip shot from 30 yards out that the Chicopee goal keeper Aidan Berube mishandled for the 1-0 lead. Chicopee then tied the scoring coming out of halftime as Eric Chmielewski scored on a pass from Mike Murphy before Bagdon found the net with a chip on a pass from Kip Newman.

Peter Bronke played well in net for the Red Hawks making 10 saves.

Athol 5, Granby 2 — Bryce King scored two goals and registered two assists as Athol edged closer to qualifying for the postseason with a 5-2 win over Granby in a Schmid Division soccer match Friday night in Athol.

After playing a scoreless first half, Athol erupted for five second half scores and now have to earn two points over its final three games to earn its ticket for postseason play.

Dilan Fountain, Nick Bousquet and Angel Rivera all had goals for the Red Raiders in support of Casey Mason who registered three saves in net to earn the victory.

Pioneer 4, Greenfield 0 — Felix Pruitt-Dahl scored a goal and added two assists to lead Pioneer Valley to a 4-0 win over Greenfield in a McGrath Division boys soccer match Friday night in Northfield.

Garrett Cote added a goal and an assist while teammates Jacob Quinn and Nate Mousseau each added a score of their own. Ryan Underwood registered three saves in net for the Panthers while Alex Carballo was busy in net for the Green Wave turning away 12 shots.

Four Rivers 0, Eagle Hill 0 — Jonah Goldstein made five saves including a save on a direct kick with two minutes left in the game as Four Rivers tied Eagle Hill School 0-0 in a River Valley Athletic League boys soccer match Friday afternoon in Hardwick.

Eagle Hill defeated Four Rivers 3-1 earlier on this season and came into the game with an unbeaten record but behind the saves from Goldstein and strong defensive play from Gavin Steele McCutchen. The tie leaves the Otters with a record of 6-1-1 with three games remaining in the regular season.
