Schools: Hawks suffer first loss

Rowan Blair won three points in the No. 6 match behind a round of 50, but visiting Frontier Regional School finished one victory shy of an undefeated season Thursday afternoon.

The Red Hawks finished 14-1 overall with a season-ending 16-8 loss to South Hadley in an independent match at The Ledges Golf Club. The two teams split a pair of matches late in the season.

“The kids went in there with high hopes but they just had a tough day out there,” Frontier coach Bill Fitzpatrick admitted.

Mikey Corduff had the low round of the day for the Hawks, shooting 43 at No. 1. Kyle Maynard (44), Gunnar Moore (45), Bryan Baumann (47) and Kalen Evans (55) all took one point in their respective matches.

Frontier now set its sights on the WMass Div. 2 championship set for Monday at Ludlow Country Club.

Smith Academy 16, Mohawk 8 — Daniel Cavanaugh earned match medalist honors with a 39, helping Smith Academy to a 16-8 win over Mohawk in an independent golf match Thursday at Wyckoff Country Club in Holyoke.

The loss dropped the Warriors to a final record of 8-9 overall, one game short of qualification as a team for the WMass Div. 3 tourney.

Will Guyette had the low round of the day for Mohawk at No. 1, shooting 48. Ben Thompson paced the visitors with four points in his match at No. 4 behind a round of 53. Triston LaCross (56), Andy Robertson (55), Aiden Drury (65) and Gage Patenaude (69) all took a point toward the team’s total.

Ware 19, Greenfield 5 — Hunter Roberts shot 42 and won 2½ points in his match at No. 3, but host Greenfield dropped a 19-5 decision to Ware in Bi-County East action Thursday at the Country Club of Greenfield.

Ryan Cote also shot 42 at No. 1 for the Green Wave (9-5, 9-4) and scored a point.

Danny Provost also had a point for Greenfield out of the No. 6 hole with a 56, and Jake Cote shot 56 and took ½ point at No. 5.

Field hockey

Frontier 1, South Hadley 1 — It has not been an easy week for the Frontier field hockey team.

After facing rival Greenfield High School on Tuesday night, the Red Hawks closed the weeks with back-to-back tests as they faced South Hadley on Thursday before another game against Greenfield today. After falling, 2-1, to Greenfield, the Hawks did pick up an important point against the Tigers with a 1-1 draw in Valley League action in South Hadley.

The Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first half as Alyson Barnes scored with 11 minutes, 50 seconds to play on an assist from Olivia Vecellio. South Hadley tied the game after halftime when Bella Yee scored from Kayla Carleton with 18:33 to play.

Frontier held a 14-12 edge in shots on goal and Red Hawks’ coach Missy Mahar said she was pleased with her team’s effort.

“I think we played well today,” she began. “I think the level of intensity wasn’t as high as it was the other day, but it’s something to learn from. If we played with the level of intensity we did against Greenfield, I think we would have won.”

Skyla Burniske made 11 saves for Frontier (9-4-2), while Brooke Blair stopped 13 shots for South Hadley.

Greenfield 9, Westfield 0 — Raegan Hickey had four goals and two assists on Thursday to lead Greenfield to a resounding, 9-0, win over Westfield in a Valley League game in Westfield.

Audrey Bresciano had two goals and an assist in the win, and Olivia Joy scored twice. Katie Haselton chipped in a goal, and Mady Kuchieski had an assist. Greenfield (14-1-0) bombed the Bombers, 32-1, in shots. Sam Smith made one save for the shutout.

Mahar 6, Athol 0 — Anna Wetherbee had one goal and three assists on Senior Night, and Lily Fellows added two goals and two assists and Mahar defeated Athol, 6-0, in an independent contest at the Woodward Complex in Orange.

Mahar led 4-0 at the break. Aileen Fitzgerald had a goal and an assist, and Megan Lundgren and Gracie Marsh each added a goal. Bella Marigliano made one save for the shutout.

Ryley Pond stopped nine shots for Athol.

Turners 4, Holyoke 0 — Jade Tyler got the scoring started with the game’s lone first-half tally and added another in the second half to lift Turners Falls to a 4-0 victory over Holyoke Thursday night under the lights at the Bourdeau Fields Complex in a Bi-County League field hockey game.

Paige Sulda had a goal and two assists for the Thunder (10-5-1, 5-3-1), while Cassidhe Wozniak scored a goal and added an assist.

Turners outshot Holyoke by a 12-8 margin, with goalkeeper Haleigh Greene stopping all eight shots she faced to pick up the shutout. Holyoke held a 6-5 edge in corners.

Palmer 2, Pioneer 0 — Noel Melnick and Cassie Florence scored second-half goals and host Palmer blanked Pioneer, 2-0, in an independent game Thursday.

The game was scoreless at halftime before Palmer snatched control and picked up just its second win of the season (2-10).

Pioneer (3-9-1) put eight shots on goal, with Palmer goalkeeper Rhea Dinelle making eight saves.

Girls volleyball

Mohawk 3, Athol 1 — Ashley Reynolds had eight kills, 11 assists, four digs and eight aces to help Mohawk top Athol, 25-22, 21-25, 26-24, 25-11, in a Northern Division girls volleyball match Thursday in Buckland.

Octavia Crawford had six kills in the win, and Jordan Rice had three kills, 12 digs and an ace. Cassidy Upton added six aces for Mohawk, which improved to 5-11.
