GREENFIELD — Jim Meehleder and Stephanie Marshall believe windows are both looked through and, often, overlooked.

The irony is not lost on them, and it partially served as the inspiration for the two Greenfield transplants to start the Scenic Window Co. two years ago. The married couple has been in the contracting business for years, and on Aug. 23, they closed on the building at 348 High St. — formerly the home of Akey Insurance Agency — to open a new showroom. They recently opened after renovating the 1,100-square-foot space for a couple of months.

“So, here we here,” Meehleder, 56, said last week. “We do a lot of residential. We focus on commercial as well.”

Scenic Window Co. is open by appointment or by chance. The business sells Sierra Pacific Windows as well as triple-pane European windows.

“About seven years ago I used my first set of European windows and, frankly, I never went back. … I just saw how good they were,” Meehleder said. “I think they have a lot to offer.”

He demonstrated a European window, which can be tilted inward for quality ventilation and opened inward to make cleaning easier.

“It’s such a tight seal, and they’re so easy to work with and they’re easy to clean,” said Marshall, who handles the bookkeeping for Scenic Window Co. The central New Jersey native said she and Meehleder used European windows in their home, which she said was built in 1928, and they made the space much more comfortable.

Marshall, 50, and Meehleder said they used Common Capital, a community loan fund and non-profit organization, to get capital to rehabilitate the building.

Marshall mentioned she splits her time between Scenic Window Co., being a musician with The Boxcar Lilies and working another job. Meehleder, who hails from southern California, said he was a day away from starting a job as a Hyundai dealer in the 1980s when he attended a ballgame with a contractor buddy who suggested Meehleder work for him and learn the ropes.

“The rest is history,” Meehleder said.
