GREENFIELD — Two local family-owned energy businesses have merged. Sandri Energy announced Thursday plans to purchase Tognarelli Heating and Cooling.

“We’ve been competitors for years. Respectful, happy competitors,” said Mike Behn, president of The Sandri Companies, which operates Sandri Energy. “The Tognarellis hit a point in the development of their business that it was either time to expand or to look around at other options. It was very important for them to keep the company as intact as possible to take care of their employees.”

With the sale, the 10 or so employees currently working for Tognarelli Heating and Cooling will retain their jobs under Sandri Energy. The sale of Tognarelli Heating and Cooling is expected to close in the first week of January. After that, full integration could take three to six months.

“We love our business, we love our customers, and our employees are like family to us. We feel a great deal of responsibility toward everyone that has helped make us a success. We wanted to make the situation a ‘win-win’ and that’s what we’ve found in a merger with Sandri,” said Kristie Tognarelli in a prepared statement.

Behn said merging is beneficial for both companies. Joel and Kristie Tognarelli — who began Tognarelli Heating and Cooling in 1999, offering heating, air conditioning, and plumbing services — will continue to work from their Pierce Street offices under Sandri Energy’s umbrella. And for Sandri Energy, it’s an opportunity to add plumbing to their list of services. Joel Tognarelli is a master plumber.

Sandri Energy, which began in 1931, has customers throughout Franklin and Hampshire counties, southern Vermont, and New Hampshire, according to the statement.
