Sandri Energy cleans minor oil leak at Wendell police substation

WENDELL — A minor oil leak at the police substation was remedied by the supplying business last week, according to Wendell’s projects coordinator.

Phil Delorey told Selectboard members at Wednesday night’s meeting that Sandri Energy responded to clean up the accidental spill at 4 Center St. as soon as the company was notified. He said, however, an odor still hangs in the air.

“The smell is still there,” he said, attending the meeting remotely. He later told the Greenfield Recorder that Sandri did an excellent job at handling the leak, though he worries the odor will get worse as the weather warms.

Mike Behn, Sandri’s president and chief operating officer, explained the police substation is set up for automatic delivery. He said a driver pumped in 2 gallons of oil until he heard a whistle indicating a full tank. Behn said some oil trickled out of the tank and was cleaned up soon after Delorey alerted the company. Behn also said the town later called Sandri about a lingering odor that the Greenfield company is working to address.

“We’ll have to keep up with that,” he said.

Wendell no longer has its own police department, as it contracts with neighboring Leverett for that town to provide such services. The building at 4 Center St. was renovated last year and is now used as a substation where police officers can park their cruisers, use a restroom and use a computer.
