GREENFIELD — Samantha Smith has proven many things throughout her sterling career at Greenfield High School.

The senior added to the ever-growing list Friday night. Namely, you can score 1,000 points while remaining uncompromisingly unselfish.

Smith reached the magic number on her home floor in front of an adoring crowd. Her turnaround bucket in traffic just 41 seconds into the third quarter made Smith just the sixth player in Greenfield history to accomplish the feat. She finished with 20 points — exactly the total she needed after entering the night with 980 for her career — to help the Green Wave roll past Pioneer, 79-46, in an independent girls basketball game at Nichols Gymnasium.

“I didn’t want to force it, I just kind of let it happen,” said Smith, who exited the game with 2:43 remaining in the third quarter to boisterous applause. “I had faith my teammates would find me and if it was going to happen, it was going to happen.”

Finding themselves on the brink of history can affect different players in different ways. For Smith, nothing differed in her game Friday night. There would be no forcing offense or taking ill-advised shots. When her teammates tried to feed her early, she kept the ball moving for Wave players in better scoring positions.

“Well, first of all, she’s a complete player but she’s just so unselfish,” lauded Greenfield coach John Hickey of Smith. “There were spots in the first half where she’s six points away (from 1,000) and she’s still just passing and playing how she would like nothing was happening. That’s just the kind of character she possesses.”

Smith became the fifth girl in Greenfield history to reach 1,000 career points, joining teammate Raegan Hickey as the most recent entrants to the banner that sits high atop Nichols Gymnasium. Hickey, who reached 1,000 points last year, was credited with the assist on Smith’s 1,000th point Friday. The roles were reversed a year ago, with Smith assisting on Hickey’s basket that got her to 1,000.

“Everyone really wanted her to get there. It’s awesome; we were all just so excited to help her accomplish it,” said Raegan Hickey of Smith’s big night.

Smith joined Ann Brissette (1990, 1,333 points), Kelly Doton (2000, 1,168), Kathy Couture (2002, 1,108) and Hickey (2018, TBD) as GHS girls on the 1,000 point list. Angelo Thomas (1993, 1,684) is the only boy in school history to score 1,000 points.

“It’s a really special moment to have it happen here (at home),” said Smith. “It’s definitely exciting but for people that know me, they know I’m happy it’s behind me now and we can just move on and focus on winning games.”

The night started quickly for Greenfield, which improved to 8-1 overall. Katie Haselton hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Hickey followed with a 3 to stake the Wave to a 9-0 lead just 1:30 into the first quarter.

Smith scored six points in the first quarter before really kicking the scoring into overdrive in the second stanza. A runner and a turnaround bucket early in the frame got her to 10 points, halfway there. She connected on four straight free throws midway through the second and in the final minute of the first half, Smith hit back-to-back layups, pulling her within a single basket of the milestone. She nearly got there right before intermission, but instead opted for a pass to an open Haselton, who hit a jumper at the buzzer to give Greenfield a commanding 46-15 lead at the break.

“Stats have never been that important to me,” explained Smith. “I’ve always wanted to leave my mark on the program. I guess scoring 1,000 points is a good way to do it but honestly, that’s never been a focus or something I’ve given all that much thought to.”

Needing just the two points after halftime, Smith wasted little time. After sinking the tough shot, play was briefly halted so she could celebrate with her teammates and family.

“I knew when she and Raegan were in third and fourth grade, then AAU since fifth grade, you saw something special there,” began Hickey of his two 1,000-point scorers. “But once they got to ninth, 10th grade, it was, ‘Hey, this can definitely happen.’ But again, it’s very much been a thing where neither Raegan last year or Sam this year were talking about it or thinking about it. That’s the sign of a special team and a special group of kids.”

The Big 3 of Smith, Haselton and Hickey combined for 60 points — the second time this season the trio have gone for 60 or more points. Haselton led the way with 22 points, followed by Smith with 20 and Hickey with 18. Smith added eight rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Hickey had eight assists and seven boards. Racquel Provost added 6 points and Eva Pruitt-Dahl followed with 5.

Pioneer (5-3) was led by senior Olivia Rowe’s 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks. Paige Loughman tossed in 10 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Steph Scoville added 9 points and six boards.

Greenfield now takes the road for two straight games, beginning with Monday’s independent tilt against Pope Francis. The Panthers play three games next week, with matchups against Mt. Everett, Putnam and Easthampton.
