GREENFIELD — A new film depicting the groundbreaking work of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in fighting for equal rights and overturning a century of gender discrimination will be screened at Greenfield Garden Cinemas on Main Street in Greenfield on Wednesday, Feb. 13.

The Franklin County Bar Association’s special showing of “On The Basis of Sex,” will be at 5:30 p.m., and will benefit its Community Fund, which supports the “cultural and educational efforts that promote access to justice and civic awareness,” including the Thomas W. Merrigan Scholarship Fund to pay for books for graduating high school students in Franklin County each year.

Comments by Superior Court Judge Mark Mason and retired appellate attorney Wendy Sibbbison of Greenfield will precede the screening of the new movie.

“I’m looking forward to seeing this movie with friends and colleagues who care about the social justice issues that RBG has fought for all her life,” said Lisa G. Kent, a Greenfield attorney who chairs the community fund. “In these dark political times, we all need this pick-me-up, this reminder that quiet and steady advocacy of the right values and ideas can eventually conquer ignorance and make our society more just.”

The community fund, she added, “aims to expand its activities to provide greater support for projects that increase civic knowledge and the legal system.”

Bar association President Benjamin Simanski, who is also assistant clerk magistrate of Franklin County Superior Court added, “The public cares deeply about equality and the rights of individuals, as do lawyers and the courts.  By viewing this movie together, as a community, and discussing its message, we can realize how much power we as the individuals have to make better laws.”
