BERNARDSTON — A portion of Route 10 was closed and roughly 400 Eversource customers lost power on Monday after a Mack dump truck took down a utility line.

The Bernardston Police and Fire departments assisted Eversource and Verizon crews as they worked to clear a downed utility line on Route 10 between Merrifield and North Cross roads at approximately 9:30 a.m. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation also assisted.

“The bucket came up, hooked the lines where they crossed over the road, and because of the pressure, it did snap a pole in half,” said Bernardston Police Sgt. Jordan Zukowski. “The truck itself didn’t take the pole out, it was the pressure on the lines.”

Zukowski said emergency personnel with Northfield EMS examined the driver and released him shortly thereafter, as he didn’t sustain any apparent injuries.

A detour route directing drivers to Parmenter Road was put in place. According to a statement released by MassDOT at approximately 1 p.m., the road closure is expected to last roughly 12 hours.

The incident, Zukowski said, remains under investigation. Police Chief James Palmeri said the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, commonly known as the Truck Team, is also investigating.
