CHARLEMONT — State Police arrested a man Thursday in Charlemont who is suspected of robbing a Northampton bank earlier in the day.

Northampton Police responded to a report of a robbery at People’s United Bank on King Street at around 11:20 a.m., where an initial investigation found that a suspect had fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to the Northampton Police Department.

“Using some local business cameras the suspect was seen getting into a truck in a nearby parking lot and driving away,” the department reported on its Facebook page later in the day.

The truck was reported as a 2004 Ford F250 pickup, and a description of the vehicle was shared with area police departments.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., State Trooper John Olari, assigned to the State Police Shelburne Falls barracks, located the truck outside a residence on Heath Stage Terrace in Charlemont, according to David Procopio, a State Police spokesperson. Olari also located a man outside who matched the description of the alleged bank robber.

Other troopers from the Shelburne Falls barracks also responded to the scene. Troopers detained the man while Northampton Police detectives and officers from the State Police Detective Unit for Franklin/Hampshire counties responded to the scene, according to Procopio. The man was arrested and turned over to Northampton Police, who said the investigation is ongoing with charges pending.
