Local cadets recognized for CyberPatriot participation

AMHERST — The Brig. Gen. Arthur J. Pierce Cadet Squadron recently recognized four cadets — including two from Franklin County — who participated in CyberPatriot, a national youth cyber defense competition.

The team’s coach, 1st Lt. Amanda Menier, awarded certificates to Cadet 1st Lt. Nate Johnston of Greenfield, Cadet Master Sgt. Elwin Binu of Sunderland, Cadet Technical Sgt. Firas Hashmi of Amherst, and Cadet Senior Airman Alexander Miller of Rindge, New Hampshire. Menier also presented a certificate to the squadron’s commander, Maj. Steve Lauzon, as the Brig. Gen. Arthur J. Pierce Cadet Squadron placed third in the state’s All-Service Gold Tier.

Though the teammates were competing for the first time this year, they accumulated enough points to compete for state awards in the second-highest tier.

“Our cadets are already making plans to win the Gold Tier next year,” Menier said in a statement. “If we have enough interest, we could enroll two teams.”

CyberPatriot teams work to detect and correct security vulnerabilities on Windows and Linux computer systems. The CyberPatriot competition was created by the Air & Space Forces Association to inspire K-12 students to pursue careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
