NORTHFIELD — Pioneer Valley Regional School’s instruction will be fully remote for the next two weeks, due to a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the school community, according to a letter sent to families in the Pioneer Valley Regional School District from Superintendent Jonathan Scagel on Monday.

The new remote model begins Tuesday. The school expects to return to its hybrid model Nov. 2, Scagel said.

The district’s Northfield Elementary School and Bernardston Elementary School are not affected, and will remain in their current hybrid models.

“We have been planning for this scenario during our reopening planning process and have a comprehensive plan in place to continue sanitizing the school, inform families whose students were at risk of exposure or in close contact, and support the affected family as they navigate this stressful experience,” Scagel wrote.

As of Monday night, Scagel’s letter was not available on the district’s website or on any of several associated Facebook pages. It had only been emailed to families.

The person who tested positive was not identified by name — nor identified as a student, staff member or other community member. It was confirmed that the person’s exposure to the coronavirus was not in school, Scagel said.

Any families whose students may have come into contact with this person will be notified privately, Scagel said.

Until school returns to a hybrid model, sports and other after-school activities will be canceled. Scagel said the school building will be sanitized according to contingency plans prepared at the beginning of the year.
