ATHOL – An Athol man is reportedly facing charges after allegedly using an ax to attack his girlfriend and barricading himself with two handguns inside the home on Tuesday.

Jerry Lee Hamel, 54, was booked at the Athol Police Station and will reportedly face charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and attempted murder.

According to the department’s Facebook page, a 30-year-old woman reported to Athol Police at 7 p.m. that her boyfriend had attacked her with an ax, though she was able to flee the home unharmed.

Officers Courtney Call and Brandon Newell responded to 55 Grove St. in an attempt to make contact with the reported assailant. Upon arrival, the officers received further information that indicated Hamel had barricaded himself inside and was armed with two handguns. The State Police Tactical Unit was called to assist and successfully negotiated his surrender without further incident.
