PHILLIPSTON — State Police say a 24-year-old Athol woman was one of two people killed in a head-on crash on Route 2 in Phillipston late Tuesday night.

Troopers at the Athol State Police barracks received a call just before 11 p.m. reporting a driver heading west in the eastbound lane of the highway. A short time later, troopers received another call reporting a head-on collision west of Exit 79 in Phillipston.

The accident occurred in the area where Route 2 drops from a divided four-lane highway to an undivided highway with a single lane in each direction.

Investigators say a 2014 Chevrolet Sonic, operated by the unidentified Athol woman, crashed head-on with a 2018 Ford Escape driven by a 26-year-old Westford man. Both operators were declared dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by troopers from the Athol State Police barracks. Units from Troop B Headquarters, State Police Crime Scene Services Section (CSSS), State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) and Worcester County detectives responded to the scene, as did officers and EMS from Athol, Gardner and Templeton. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the state Department of Transportation also assisted.

All lanes of the highway were shut down to allow for an investigation. They reopened at approximately 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
