NORTHFIELD — New technology resources at Pioneer Valley Regional School will be showcased at “Pioneering the Designers of the Future,” on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the school.

The event will mainly be a preview of how the school is expanding its offerings, said Pioneer Technology Director John Heffernan. In future years, he said, Technology Night will focus more on students’ projects, similar to the school’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) Night.

Pioneer’s technology program is focused on “design thinking,” which challenges students with real-world problems that do not have a single right answer, Heffernan said. The goal is to apply that at all levels from pre-school through high school

Much of what’s new this year comes through agreements with local companies to fund the school’s technology and design programs and to give Pioneer students opportunities for internship-like experiences in the companies. The donations have allowed Pioneer to buy robotics kits and equipment like a 3-d printer, Heffernan said.

There will be demonstrations of some of the new equipment, and students from the school’s new robotics clubs will be there.

The Massachusetts National Guard will also be there with its mobile STEM lab, Heffernan said.
