A New Hampshire glass blower and rug hooker has a new exhibit on display at the Shelburne Arts Co-op. Peter Bott’s “Wool and Glass” collection will be on display through Nov. 25.
Bott has been an artist his entire life, and said he was inspired by his art teachers growing up in Gloucester and Hancock, New Hampshire, to pursue art as a career. He attended Massachusetts College of Art, and Alfred University and double majored in fiber sculpture and glass blowing and received a masters of fine arts in fiber techniques from Claremont Graduate University in California.
Bott said after returning to New England he became a therapist, but he continued hooking rugs and tapestries on the side.
“My tapestries are really special to me,” Bott said.
His fiber work is portrait-like as he captures scenes of animals, like cats, and even turns photos of his glass vases into woven rugs.
Bott would spend months working on pieces for himself as a hobby, but after retiring from therapy work he was inspired to take on art full time and begin making works to sell. His latest collection “Wool and Glass” celebrates his reintroduction to the professional art world, and reintroduction to glass work.
Bott learned how to blow glass in college, but did not pursue glass as a medium until eight years ago, when he and his husband visited the Hot Glass Art Center in Marlboro, New Hampshire and he rediscovered his love for glasswork.
“This is a show of both my mediums,” Bott said. “They’re both fun and colorful but really different materials that require different skill sets.”

He said he loves the contrast of the two mediums. Glass work is hot and fast and over in minutes, while hooking a rug is slow, meditative and can take over a month to complete.
However both allow him to play with color and celebrate the bright and happy things in the world.
“Choosing color has been my therapy; I like to keep things bright,” Bott said. “Go check out my show, it’s fun.”
“Wool and Glass,” runs at the Shelburne Arts Co-op from Oct. 30 through Nov. 25. The Co-op is located at 26 Bridge St. in Shelburne Falls and is open every day from 11 - 5, except Tuesdays.
