‘People don’t hate Mr. Trump’

I am tired of Congressional Republicans, Fox News, and a recent contributor to My Turn whining incessantly and disingenuously that Democrats have wanted to impeach Donald Trump ever since he took office and suggesting that his present impeachment is, therefore, a sham.

In fact, Trump has been breaking the law since before he became president. Major players in his campaign are in jail, awaiting sentencing, or under investigation, including Michael Cohen, who is serving a three-year term for a crime Trump paid him to commit.

Trump has never divested himself of his business interests and continues to make money off the presidency, a violation of the Constitution.

The Mueller Report did not absolve him of crimes but accused him squarely of obstruction of justice, leaving it to Congress to punish him. The House of Representatives sat on its hands through all of this malfeasance until Trump decided that foreign interference in our elections had worked so well for him in the past that he tried to shake down a vulnerable ally to make it happen again. (Yes, Virginia, there was a shake down: many witnesses have testified to the fact that the Ukrainians understood this and were panicked about it.)

Our contributor has promised to remind us of Mr. Trump’s many accomplishments. Let me help with that: alienating most of our allies (except those with ruthless dictators); pardoning war criminals and thereby condoning war crimes; a budget deficit of one trillion dollars; a notable increase in hate crimes; eviscerating environmental protections; telling over 13,000 lies while in office.

People don’t hate Mr. Trump; they hate what he does and says. They hate having a Criminal-in-Chief, a Liar-in-Chief, a Tweeter-in-Chief instead of a real President.
