GREENFIELD — Parking will be free at the Olive Street parking garage for the duration of the Franklin County Fair this weekend to accommodate the extra traffic.
The gates for the fairgrounds open at 8 a.m. on both days. The fair expects to be operational until 10 p.m. on Saturday and 9 p.m. on Sunday.
Those who park at the Olive Street parking garage can either walk to the fairgrounds or be transported via a free shuttle service offered by the fair, according to a notice from the mayor’s office. Shuttles will be available from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Once at the fairgrounds, attendees can take advantage of the 30 recycling and composting stations placed throughout the property to dispose of various items, according to the Franklin County Solid Waste Management District.
Items that can be placed in blue recycling bins include: plastic bottles and containers; metal cans, foil and pie plates; glass bottles and jars; and juice boxes and cartons.
Items that can be placed in the green compost bins include: food, but no liquids; paper products, such as paper plates, blows, food holders, paper napkins and paper towels, wood skewers, stirrers and toothpicks; and compostable “plastic” made from biodegradable materials, like compostable beer cups from the beer tent; and utensils and cups used by some vendors.
Conventional plastic, foil, metal or glass should not be placed in the compost bins. Commercial composting is provided by Martin’s Farm in Greenfield.
The fair’s waste diversion program is made possible by the Franklin County Solid Waste Management District, Martin’s Farm, the Greenfield Department of Public Works, Graves Farm, dozens of volunteers, attendees and the food vendors who also separate food waste for composting.
