SUNDERLAND — Families were welcomed to the Sunderland Public Library Tuesday afternoon to meet Leverett-based author and illustrator Micha Archer and celebrate Title I grant funding for the Union 38 School District.

Title I grant funding provides extra support to a select group of students with learning goals — in Union 38’s case, reading goals.

“We decided to kick off the school year with a family event to encourage parent involvement in our reading program and in their children’s reading goals,” said Union 38 Director of Education Lara Ramsey. “It helps to build community first and foremost, because then families find it easier to reach out to the schools with questions and to offer input to the way we use our Title I funds. We invited families whose children work with reading specialists in Whately and Conway, too, because we want all of our students to have similar opportunities.”
