ORANGE — An Orange man pleaded not guilty in Orange District Court on Monday to charges stemming from a fight in which police say he stabbed another man with a sword Sunday evening.

Kevin M. Ranahan Jr., 35, faces charges of attempted murder, to wit, knife, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He is being held without bail at the Franklin County Jail and House of Correction in Greenfield until a detention hearing scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The victim was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Orange Police Chief James Sullivan on Monday declined to identify the victim, but said he is in stable condition and expected to survive. Sullivan said the fight involved eight to 10 people who knew each other and occurred behind 50 East Main St. at roughly 6:40 p.m. on Sunday.

“There may be further charges coming out of this,” the chief said, adding that responding officers Chris Bisceglia and Timothy Powling are still investigating the incident.
