NORTHFIELD — A 35-year-old Northfield man died Sunday after his motorcycle crashed on Millers Falls Road (Route 63) in Northfield.

Police were called to the area on Sunday, when a driver traveling south on Route 63 came upon the crash and stopped to call 911 at 8:18 p.m., according to a press release from the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office. The driver stayed on the scene until Northfield Police officers and Massachusetts State Police troopers arrived.

It is unknown how much time passed between when the accident occurred and when the driver came upon the crash, stated Laurie Loisel, communication and outreach director with the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man from Northfield whose identity has not been released at this time, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sunday’s accident is the second fatal motorcycle crash in the Northwestern District in just as many days. The Northwestern District is comprised of Hampshire and Franklin counties, as well as the Worcester County town of Athol.

Gregory J. Papageorge, 39, of Hatfield, died early Saturday when his motorcycle went off the road at the intersection of Pantry and Mountain roads in Hatfield at around 1:30 a.m.

In both accidents, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, according to the release. Loisel said it is believed there were no other vehicles involved in either accident, but both crashes remain under investigation by State Police troopers assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office as well as the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
