NORTHFIELD — The Planning Board chair updated his colleagues this week on the status of two Moody Center projects in town.

Stephen Seredynski explained lots have been designated for prefabricated cabins at the center’s proposed Pierson Road campground, and architect Christian Arnold of Clockwork Architecture informed him they are due to be delivered on Nov. 1.

“They’re going to arrive already built,” Seredynski told his fellow Planning Board members on Wednesday.

Seredynski said the Northfield Board of Health has approved the campground’s septic system, which is expected to be completed this year, and there are plans to install a water system. He said The Moody Center hopes to open the campground in 2024.

The Greenfield Recorder previously reported the approved permit will limit occupancy to 78 overnight guests. The designs accommodate two people per unit for each of the 39 buildings — which include 12 cabins and 27 “large furnished tents” — and 56 people in the 76-acre campground’s conference center.

Officials with The Moody Center and Clockwork Architecture began sharing plans for the proposed campground during Planning Board meetings between July and October 2019. The proposal proved controversial, however, with residents raising concerns about lighting, noise and traffic. Nearby residents asserted the Planning Board exceeded its authority in October 2019 by granting the campground’s special permit and filed an appeal of the decision in Franklin County Superior Court. Judge Michael Callan ultimately dismissed the case in May 2021.

Seredynski also mentioned on Wednesday that there are plans to convert Revell and Holton halls, which The Moody Center owns on Main Street, into two bed and breakfasts. He said the planners have applied for the necessary building permits, but Arnold informed him there are no imminent plans for construction at this time.

There had previously been talks about renovating the halls into a 24-room inn. Arnold has said lodging would be open to the public, with an “emphasis” on use by visitors of The Moody Center and events that it hosts.
