NORTHFIELD — After a summer where the Northfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9874 was unable to host its usual weekly meals, its members are now offering a drive-thru version of its annual chicken barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 3.

In addition to chicken and sides of baked beans, potato salad and coleslaw, patrons can get beer, wine or a cocktail to-go. Proceeds from ticket sales, which cost $15 each, will benefit the Northfield VFW, located at 545 Mount Hermon Station Road. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.

“Any support we get is great,” said VFW member Frank Froment. “We pass it along to veterans in need, and there are a few of them in need right now.”

Froment said the Northfield VFW hopes to sell between 150 and 200 tickets for the Oct. 3 meal. As of Wednesday, 120 had already been sold. To request tickets, call or text Froment at 717-350-0171 or email him at

When purchasing tickets, residents must choose a meal pick-up window. Windows are from noon to 1 p.m., 1 to 2 p.m. and 2 to 3 p.m. Froment asks that patrons wear masks when they drive up to get their meals. He said volunteers will direct traffic. Tickets to the 50/50 raffle may also be requested when reserving a meal ticket and time, or on the day of the event.

Froment said members of the Northfield VFW have been holding their monthly meetings outdoors during the summer. While Post 9874 usually holds a cookout on Friday nights, serving burgers and fries with the bar open, Froment said it wasn’t possible this year due to the lasting COVID-19 pandemic.

“Normally we have picnic tables all set up, and raffles,” he said.

Without being able to host their weekly meals and other fundraisers, Froment said it has been a financially rough year for the Northfield VFW. He said the post has been able to take care of veterans in need, but any help or donations is greatly appreciated.
