Northfield 350th Anniversary Committee seeks members, ideas

NORTHFIELD — A committee is forming to plan a celebration of Northfield’s 350th anniversary in 2023.

Current committee members planning for the anniversary of the town’s first settlement in 1673 are Stacy Bond, Selectboard Chair Alex Meisner, Mary King, Carol O’Brien, Pat Shearer, Martha Morse, Sue Ross, Joan and Steve Stoia, and Christine Harris, according to a press release.

The weekend spanning Friday, Sept. 29 through Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023 has been proposed as the focus of the anniversary, anchored by a parade. Other events may be spread throughout the year.

According to the release, the 350th Anniversary Committee is inviting town groups and individuals to help plan one of the following, or suggest their own festivities: a parade; a special supplement in the Greenfield Recorder; a historical tour or walk; a community art show; a concert, talent show or live music; food events such as a breakfast, barbecue or dinner; schoolchildren’s activities and performances; a craft show; the sale of anniversary souvenirs such as medallions, glassware, T-shirts and mugs; a fireworks display; a classic car show; a guided cemetery walk; a quilt show; museum open house; a 350th anniversary calendar; a Fire Station open house; a display at town libraries; tethered hot air balloon rides; a historical pageant; a cancellation stamp at the Northfield Post Office; a town song contest; a poster contest; a 21st-century version of the late-19th-century Howes Brothers photo project; a town birthday cake; a scavenger hunt; a townwide baseball or softball game; a picnic by the Schell Bridge; a farm and garden tour; an oral history project; demonstrations such as blacksmithing and quilting; a beard contest; and more.
