‘Old Time Radio Hour’ coming to New Salem library

NEW SALEM — The New Salem Public Library will be the site of an “Old Time Radio Hour,” hosted by Brian Casey, on Tuesday, May 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Using a Bluetooth device, guests will listen to the shows on a restored 1936 Crosley radio. Casey will discuss and select episodes from Academy Award-winning actor Ronald Colman’s many appearances on “The Jack Benny Program” and Ronald Colman and wife Benita Hume’s own show, “The Halls of Ivy.”

This is a free event, although donations to the programming fund are welcome. Registration is not required.

New Salem Scholarship Committee announces winners

NEW SALEM — The New Salem Scholarship Committee has announced seven winners: Maggie Arnold, Morgan Barnes, Burl Derderian, Serena LeBlanc, Morgan McCarthy, Andrew Ohlson and Aliyah Santana.

Committee members thank donors and contributors to the fund. The committee hopes to continue its scholarship efforts next year.

Meals program seeks volunteer

ORANGE — The Franklin County Community Meals Program is seeking a volunteer for its Orange Food Pantry at 118 East Main St.

The program needs someone from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays to greet guests who will be waiting outside the pantry. The volunteer would jot down the time of guests’ arrival, their first name and household size.

Village Neighbors holding members meeting, volunteer appreciation day

SHUTESBURY — Village Neighbors, a nonprofit that provides services to people ages 60 and up in Leverett, Shutesbury, Wendell and New Salem, plans to hold its annual members meeting and volunteer appreciation day at the Shutesbury Athletic Club on Sunday, May 21.

Jeannette Stockton, Elizabeth Fernández O’Brien, Judy “JR” Raphael and Donald Stone are up for reelection to positions with Village Neighbors. Barbara Bodzin is running for the first time.

The members meeting is set for noon to 1 p.m. and the Spring Fling Volunteer Appreciation Party is slated for 1 to 3 p.m. The Shutesbury Athletic Club is at 82 Wendell Road.

Village Neighbors holding Dementia Friend Info Session

WENDELL — Village Neighbors plans to hold its next one-hour Dementia Friend Information Session at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13. It will be held at the Wendell Senior Center and via Zoom.

All members and volunteers are encouraged to attend an information session to acquire basic awareness of normal aging as opposed to dementia, as well as tips on how to communicate with folks with language and memory difficulties.

According to Dementia Friendly Massachusetts, a grassroots initiative of the Massachusetts Councils on Aging and a member of Dementia Friendly America, 150,000 people in Massachusetts are living with dementia, and that number is expected to grow to 250,000 by 2030.
